Mike Scappa
Head Coach
Mike Scappa was named the fourth York College baseball coach in the 44 years of the program’s history in July of 2011. Scappa replaced long-time head coach Paul Saikia, who had served as the Spartans’ leader since 1988. Saikia was named the Spartans’ Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation in late spring of 2011.
Scappa's first year at the helm of the program saw the Spartans notch a record of 22-20. After a rough start to the campaign, York rallied to win 10 of their final 14 games with a young and talented roster that is primed for very good 2013 season. The Spartans were very close to having a much different record in 2012 as the Spartans lost nine one-run decisions.
The Spartans had a strong 2014 season as the Spartans went 29-14 with a regular season Capital Athletic Conference championship. The Spartans went a blistering 14-2 in the league as they hosted the 2014 CAC championships at Jaquet Field. Scappa earned the CAC Coach of the Year award while freshman righthander Elliot Mortimer was named the league's Rookie of the Year. Six Spartans earned All-CAC honors under Scappa's guideance including four first-teamers. Senior catcher Colbe Herr became Scappa's first NABC All-American as he earned a third team berth. Herr, Brad Wenzel, Andrew Hershey and Derek Pitzer were All-South Region honorees for the season.
York posted another 25 win season in 2019 as York finished 25-16 overall and 14-7 in the CAC. Freshman Austin Denlinger was named the CAC Rookie of the Year in addition to earning second team honors while senior Grant Oberholtzer was a first team selection for the second straight year.
The Spartans are 165-167-2 in nine seasons under Scappa while they are 76-66 in Capital Athletic Conference play during the same stretch.
Scappa is entering his 24th season as a part of the Spartans’ baseball program. He was a four-year letter winner for the Green and White before joining Saikia’s staff as an assistant coach. He had spent 13 years coaching the hitters and catchers in addition to being involved in the recruiting process for the Spartans.
Scappa has recruited and coached ten players who have earned first-team All-CAC honors while he has had eight players earn a combined nine second-team All-CAC awards. He has coached four CAC Rookies of the Year (Mortimer, Dan Gurganus, Jack Barry, and Austin Denlinger), eight All-Region selections and one All-American.
Scappa was a four-year starter as a switch-hitting catcher from 1995-1998. While wearing the Green and White of York College, Scappa accomplished as much as any team leader in program history. A two-time captain of the team, Scappa hit for a career average of .305 and was twice named to the All-CAC squad. He made two trips to the NCAA Tournament and won one CAC championship.
Scappa has accumulated a wealth of baseball knowledge during his playing career that included high school baseball at tradition-filled Gloucester Catholic High School in southern New Jersey. He played summer ball for the Brooklawn American Legion that is perennially considered one of the best in the nation.
Scappa graduated from York College in 1998 with his bachelor’s degree in history. He earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from York College in 2007. Scappa resides in York with his wife, Heather, and their two sons.
